The Trenton Police Department K9 Unit was established on November 28, 1995 with the department's first full service K9 dog named Kevlar. Kevlar was handled by Officer Rick Tanguay, and together they worked until Kevlar's retirement in November 2002.
Officer Tanguay was then paired up with the department's second K9 unit, Kopper. Kopper has served the police department since 2002. In April of 2011, the police department added K9 Truax. Truax is handled by Officer Mike Hawkins. Both Kopper and Truax are assigned to uniform road patrol duty.
Kopper and Truax are both imported German shepherds. Kopper and Truax are certified by the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers Association in obedience, aggression control, area search, article search, building search and tracking and narcotic detection.
The K9 Unit is funded and supported by the Trenton Police Department's Forfeiture Fund.
Since 1995, the Trenton K9 Units have been involved in over 2,500 cases and have assisted in over 450 arrests.
