The Senior Citizen program under the direction of City Administration, provides information and programs to meet the needs of the senior population. Among the services and programs that are provided include: blood pressure screening, legal aid, Medicare assistance program, monthly senior newsletter, tele-visit, snow removal and lawn service referral, volunteer program, transportation program, travel program and flu vaccination clinic.
Eating a balanced diet is essential for good health. Wayne County Office of Nutrition Services in conjunction with Senior Alliance and volunteers from Trenton Senior Program offer a nutrition program for persons 60 years of age or older. All seniors, regardless of income, can take advantage of this service. The nutrition site is located at the Church of Christ, 2650 Grange, Trenton. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. Call 676-1848, 24 hours in advance for reservation. A $2.25 donation is requested. Hot lunches and emergency frozen meals are also available to qualified homebound seniors. Available to seniors 60 years or older, this agency provides a number of services including: adult day care (fee), benefits eligibility service, care management, elder abuse services, long term care ombudsman, Michigan Emergency Pharmaceutical program for seniors, respite care, senior community service employment program, shelter advisory program, and vision services. Most programs are free, however, donations are accepted. Contact the Westfield Office for referral.
Whether it's a trip to the doctor or hospital, or running errands to the bank or grocery store, Trenton Transportation, a taxi shuttle service for Trenton Residents 60 years of age or older, will take you there! Trenton Seniors who are interested in using the shuttle service must register in advance at the Westfield Center Office located at 2700 Westfield. (This service excludes trips to the airport, bus, or train stations.) The service area includes Trenton, and neighboring communities bounded by Vreeland to the South, Northline Road to the North, Telegraph to the West, and West Jefferson to the East. The service is available Monday - Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The cost to use the shuttle service is $2.00 each way, for every drop-off. Attention Trenton Seniors! Each Monday and Wednesday the city's shuttle bus will pick-up Trenton Seniors and bring them to Westfield to participate in our Senior programs! Join the fun! The shuttle will make a "loop" around town with stops at the Westfield Center, Kennedy Recreation Center, Library and Trafford Square. Free shuttles to Meijers and Super K on Mondays and Southland on Wednesdays are also offered. The shuttle is free and serves Trenton Seniors only. Need a lift? SMART offers Trenton residents another transportation option. The program requires transportation requests be scheduled 2 days in advance and 6 days in advance for medical appointments. Looking to meet new friends? We've got the place for you! Join the Pleasant Hours, Heritage or New Horizon social clubs and keep yourself young at heart. Our clubs meet Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays in the early afternoon, depending on the group. Each club offers a wide range of activities including guest speakers, bingo, special events and more! There is something for everyone. Pleasant Hours and New Horizon Club membership is open to Trenton residents only. Heritage Club is now accepting non-residents. "I could have danced all night!" That's the word from Friendship Club members! This active bunch kicks up their heels on the dance floor every Friday evening, September - June, at the Westfield Center. Waltz your way over to join them for fun, fellowship, and lots of laughs. You won't even need a partner because they do lots of line dances! Special dinner dances are planned once a month. Membership is open to Trenton residents, 50 years of age and older. (Limited non-resident membership is available.) Nominal yearly membership dues are collected with a small door charge for regular dances. Dinner dances also require a pre-purchased ticket.
